Alan Domingo of GMA News TV‘s ‘Balita Pilipinas‘ identified the couple who were apparently caught in the act while trying to smuggle the flat screen TV out of the room they were staying in at the time. Management of said motel stated that this could have been the fourth time a flat screen TV was stolen from them, had motel staff failed to catch Espinosa and Orquiza in the act.
Espinosa, for his part, claims that he and Orquiza both have decent jobs, therefore, they need not steel flat screen TVs from motels, or anything at all, for that matter. Furthermore, the two presented to authorities a gate pass that apparently means they were cleared to leave the motel premises.
Still, motel staff stood by their word that they saw the two take the flat screen.
Aside from this motel in Talisay, it was also reported that Espinosa and Orquiza have also stolen from other motels in Cebu City.
As for Espinosa’s defense about his and his partner’s “decent jobs,” there have been cases in the past when well-off young men were arrested for the same crime — stealing flat screens from motels just to support their vice — illegal drugs. Back in 2012, twenty-something boys were caught stealing from the Allure Hotel in AS Fortuna Street, Mandaue City. They were rich enough not to invite suspicion — they looked like the kind of people who could afford to check in to expensive hotels. Following this, there appears to be very little merit to Espinosa’s claim that their decent jobs make them believably innocent from stealing.
