A video posted by a netizen named Rubylyn Capunes went viral two years ago. In the video, a five-year-old girl was seen leading the way for her blind father. She guides him to the copra farm every day so he can harvest copra and earn a living. Capunes’s original post read:
“This is the story of blind man named ”DODONG” together with his 5-year old daughter, at her young age she keeps on helping her father to guides his way to the farm and way back home. Please try to helped them by sharing this video. This is an inspiration to all.”
Many netizens were touched by the story of this blind father and his dutiful daughter. Since its posting, the video has garnered over 2.7 million views and more than 52,700 shares. More than a year later, the video piqued the attention of the ABS-CBN show “Rated K,” hosted by former news anchor Korina Sanchez. The “Rated K” team flew to Sogod, Leyte, to visit Dodong and his daughter.
The man was identified as Nelson “Dodong” Pepe and he works at a copra farm. Despite being blind, Dodong still manages to climb coconut trees to harvest copra and earn a living for his family. He earns PHP 300 daily, climbing around 60 coconut trees each day, getting paid about PHP 5 per tree.
Because he cannot see, Dodong has to be led by his five year-old daughter Jenny to and from the copra farm. He has come to rely on her to serve as his eyes.
Having been inspired by his story, “Rated K” brought Dodong and Jenny to Manila. The show took him to the Asian Eye Institute where he was diagnosed with retinal detachment and retinitis pigmentosa. As the latter was hereditary, Jenny’s eyes were also checked to see if she has the same condition. Fortunately, the doctors found Jenny’s eyes to be healthy.
“Rated K” also helped Dodong undergo livelihood training so that he can provide massage services. Aside from his training, the show also gave Dodong’s family PHP 10,000 as capital for their small sari-sari store.
