It’s a given that whenever one opens a business, sales will be quite slow in the first few days. That’s why more often than not, owners think of various gimmicks to spark interest and eventually, returning customers to sustain the business. While it pays to be creative in campaigns to pique the curiosity, it’s also important to do it within the boundary of law and common decency. And one cafe owner learned this the hard way when his supposedly clever marketing strategy backfired.
Prasong Sukkorn is the owner of Coffee On The Day, a café located in Chonburi, Thailand. To perk up his business, he thought of a gimmick to draw in customers. So Prasong hired sexy models Arisa Suwannawong and Minggomut Kongsawas as waitresses, but dressed in skimpy thongs and apron.
One of the barely naked models was photographed saucily serving customers inside the coffee shop in her racy ensemble.
In another video clip, a well-endowed model was filmed promoting the shop as she quipped, “The coffee is so good, they use plenty of milk,” and glanced down to her breasts.
Other uploaded racy pictures showed the scantily clad models striking seductive poses inside the restaurant that got online users palpitating.
While it’s true that the PR strategy had strong impact, other netizens were outraged by the offensive marketing materials. Because of the country’s conservative laws, Prasong was charged with obscenity and slapped with either a £2,255 fine (equivalent to Php161,000 based on today’s exchange rate) or three to five years jail sentence.
According to the cafe owner, he didn’t mean to be offensive and apologized over the stunt.
“There was no intention to be sexual or offensive. I posted the pictures online just as a way of marketing the business. I have apologized for this.”
Sattahip district station police commander Thanachai Usakit said that the owner acknowledged the materials were obscene.
“The owner said that he didn’t know better and admitted it was a way to publicize his coffee shop that just opened last Tuesday. He didn’t realize it would break the law, because the model in the photos wasn’t fully naked. The pictures were removed but the original offence is still present. We must investigate that and proceed with the law.”
Moreover, the sexy model regretted troubling Prasong over the gig since she only wanted to help him create buzz over his business. She explained:
“I wasn’t paid anything for this. I just did it out of the goodness of my heart to help the coffee shop. It is a new business and didn’t have customers so I just wanted to help. I have apologized for this. I hope people will forgive me. I didn’t know how angry so many people would be about it.”
