According to The Guardian, the Vietnamese man has not set foot inside a barber’s shop for 31 years in 2004 which makes this year his 44th year. He wanted to nab the world record for having the longest hair possible. By that time, he had a hair length of 6.2 meters.
His hair had been kept up in a scarf and had grown 1.2 meters from 1997. It had been last washed in 1998.
Hay was a practitioner of traditional medicine from the southern Kien Giang province in Vietnam. It is located about 220 miles south-west of Ho Chi Minh City.
Previously, the record for the world’s longest hair was held by Hoo Sateow of Chiang Mai, Thailand in 1997. He had a hair length of 5.15 meters. Sateow held his hair with a woolen hat and didn’t cut it for almost 70 years.
Unfortunately, Tran Van Hay lost his life in February 2010, six years after he got recognized for his hair length. According to The Telegraph, his hair was estimated to have been 6.8 meters during that period.
The source cited that Hay refused to have his hair cut when he was still alive since he would often get sick after each haircut. His wife, Nguyen Thi Hoa, confirmed the statement.
He lived his life simply, despite his desire to grow his hair long. Unfortunately, due to its length, motorcycle taxis reportedly declined to take him as their passengers since Hay refused to wear a helmet.
In an additional report from Metro, they cited that it wasn’t really confirmed whether Tran Van Hay held the record for the world’s longest hair in his lifetime or not.
The holder for the world’s longest hair was officially held by Xie Qiuping in 2004. According to them, it was 5.6 meters long.
